Weyermann® Oak Smoked Wheat Malt is a distinctive German smoked wheat malt that combines elegant oak smoke with light biscuit, toffee, and sweet wheat character. Made from high-quality German wheat and smoked over oak, it offers brewers a different expression of smoke than traditional beechwood-smoked barley malt.
At approximately 2.0–2.7° Lovibond, Oak Smoked Wheat Malt is extremely pale, allowing brewers to introduce substantial smoke character while maintaining a light-colored beer. Weyermann describes its signature aroma as reminiscent of fine cigar smoke, complemented by gentle biscuit and light toffee notes.
Because this is a smoked wheat malt, it is particularly interesting in wheat-based and historical beer styles. It can add smoke complexity to Weissbier, Dunkelweizen, Weizenbock, Lichtenhainer, Grodziskie-inspired beers, and other specialty smoked beers while contributing the soft grain character associated with wheat malt.
Oak Smoked Wheat Malt can also be used creatively in Wheat Wine, Lambic-inspired beers, fruit beers, and other specialty ales where a refined smoky dimension can complement fermentation character, fruit, or a complex grain bill.
Compared with Weyermann® Beech Smoked Barley Malt, the character is distinctly different. Beech Smoked Malt delivers the classic bold Rauchbier-style smoke, while Oak Smoked Wheat offers a more refined profile of oak smoke, fine cigar, biscuit, and light toffee. Having both available gives brewers two very different ways to introduce authentic smoked-malt character.
