Thomas Fawcett CaraMalt is a light British caramel malt that adds gentle sweetness, subtle caramel and toffee character, and additional body while contributing very little color compared with traditional crystal malts. It is an excellent choice when you want to enhance malt flavor and mouthfeel while keeping the finished beer relatively pale.
At approximately 10–12° Lovibond, Thomas Fawcett CaraMalt provides delicate caramelized sugar, light toffee, and sweet malt notes without the heavier raisin, dark-fruit, or deep caramel flavors associated with darker crystal malts.
Its lighter flavor and color contribution makes CaraMalt particularly useful in Pale Ales and IPAs, where it can add a touch of sweetness and body while allowing hop flavor and aroma to remain prominent. It is also an excellent addition to Golden Ales, Bitters, ESBs, and other recipes where subtle caramel complexity is desired.
Smaller additions can gently round out the malt profile and mouthfeel, while larger additions increase the beer's sweetness, body, and caramel character without dramatically increasing color.
Why Brew With Thomas Fawcett CaraMalt?
For brewers looking for subtle caramel sweetness without significantly darkening the beer, Thomas Fawcett CaraMalt is an excellent choice. Its light color and gentle caramel-toffee character make it particularly useful in Pale Ales and IPAs where you want additional body and malt complexity while keeping the beer bright and allowing the hops to remain front and center.
