Simpsons Golden Naked Oats® (GNO®) are a unique British huskless oat crystal malt that adds subtle nutty sweetness, creamy texture, and rich malt complexity to beer. Unlike ordinary flaked oats, Golden Naked Oats are malted and caramelized, giving them a distinctive flavor contribution in addition to the smooth mouthfeel associated with oats.
At approximately 5–9.5° Lovibond, Golden Naked Oats contribute a light golden color while bringing a delicious combination of sweet grain, subtle nuts, and gentle caramel-like malt character. Their flavor is noticeable without being overpowering, making them an excellent way to add another layer of complexity to both pale and dark beers.
One of the biggest reasons to brew with Golden Naked Oats is their combination of flavor and texture. They can help create a fuller, smoother mouthfeel while adding more malt character than you would typically expect from flaked oats.
This makes GNO particularly interesting in Hazy IPA and NEIPA, where their oat character can complement a soft, full-bodied beer while adding subtle malt complexity beneath the hops. They can also work beautifully in Pale Ale, Brown Ale, Porter, Stout, and other beers where a touch of nutty sweetness and additional body is desired.
Because Golden Naked Oats are huskless, higher percentages can contribute to a thicker mash. Rice hulls can be helpful when using larger amounts to improve lautering without adding flavor or fermentable extract.
Why Brew With Simpsons Golden Naked Oats®?
For brewers looking for more flavor than traditional flaked oats can provide, Simpsons Golden Naked Oats® are an excellent specialty grain. Their combination of subtle nutty sweetness, gentle caramelized malt character, and smooth oat-driven mouthfeel makes them a distinctive addition to everything from juicy, hop-forward ales to rich, malt-forward dark beers.
